At the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

•   Learn how to create a balance between physical facilities within the increasing demand for digital materials

Workshop Profile

1.            The Changing Landscape For Libraries & Librarians In The Digital Age

  This topic covers the basic landscape in any library in the internet era.  The subtopics are:

•   Physical To Virtual Libraries – Creating a balance between physical facilities with the increasing demand for digital materials
•   Individual To Community Libraries – Accommodating the needs of individuals in concert with community engagement
•   Collection To Creation Libraries – Transforming libraries into facilities for media creation, not just consumption
•   Portal To Archive Libraries – Balancing the needs for physical and digital archives

2.            Information Skills-Navigating Research in the Library

This topic covers the basic skills needed for someone starting a research project. It will show you how to locate information on your subject within the Library E-Collections.

•  Explains skills needed to research effectively
•   The best way to use keywords
•   Locating subject guides
•   Subject searching and browsing using printed sources as well as digital sources
•   Using databases

3.            Web Archiving and Digital Libraries

  This paper explore the integration of web archiving and digital libraries, so the complete life cycle involved is covered, from creation/authoring, uploading/publishing in the Web (including Web 2.0), (focused) crawling, curation, indexing, exploration (including searching and browsing), archiving, (text) analysis, up through long-term preservation.

 It will include particular coverage of current topics of interest, such as:

•   Archiving related to disasters
•   Working with big data
•   Mobile web archiving

4.            Institutional Repositories Dealing with Data Challenges.

  This will help IR managers and others in the repository community to identify strategies and practical steps to deal with research data within the increasingly complex environment of open-access scholarly communication.  The workshop will address the following:

•   What organisational, technology and resourcing capabilities do institutional repository managers need to deal with research data?
•   How can the IR function together with other actors in the institution to develop services to support research data management and long-term curation?
•   What guidelines and standards are needed to integrate IRs into the wider data repository ecology that includes research information systems, publishers and disciplinary data repositories?
